7th Annual Interdisciplinary Research Awards

Congratulations to this year’s winners!

  • Eunjeong Koh, Computer Music (Arts & Humanities)
  • Paul Glick, Mechanical Engineering (Jacobs School of Engineering)
  • Rebecca Hardesty, Communication and Science Studies Program (Social Sciences)

An awards ceremony is tentatively planned for early May.

Applications are now open to all graduate and professional students. Students currently engaged in innovative, interdisciplinary research should consider applying!

Three students will be chosen whose research exemplifies the many diverse disciplines of study at UCSD. Each will be awarded $500, a certificate from Graduate Division, and the opportunity to present their research at the 2019 Interdisciplinary Research Awards Ceremony in April, 2019.

Students must submit all application materials by email to by March 15, 2019.

Application Requirements:

  • A student-written letter of interest (ideal length: 750-1000 words) describing their research project, what makes it interdisciplinary, and the contributions from each discipline. This should be written for a lay audience.
  • Curriculum vitae or academic resume
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members, preferably members of the student’s committee and/or thesis advisors. These letters should be from faculty in two different departments that represent their interdisciplinary research.
  • All material should be in one PDF file with the student’s name as a header.
    • Note: Professors can email the letters of recommendation separately as long as the applicant’s name is featured in both the letter and the subject of the email.

The 2019 Interdisciplinary Research Awards Ceremony will be open to all students, staff, and faculty at UCSD as well as members of the community that wish to attend; therefore, the winners should be able to explain their research and its implications in a way that is accessible to all attendees.
